A Guide To Transcendental Meditation

A Guide To Transcendental Meditation

Some thirty years ago, one of the most controversial and popular meditation that caught the world by a storm is Transcendental Meditation. This meditation technique was introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India during the mid 50s. Many individuals got hooked with this technique since they were looking for ways to relieve themselves from the grind of daily living. The TM website asserts that meditation is effective when done for 15-20 minutes, mantra should be uttered while eyes are closed. This meditation is practiced twice a day for desired results that claims ' supernatural powers'. Not only common people like students started practicing Transcendental Meditation but famous people like Hollywood celebrities and world leaders as well. A majority of believers and practitioners of TM are Americans, mostly composed of college students. After a few years, the TM institute schooled thousands of people in a higher level known as Sidhi to gain advanced skills like levitation. According to some TM practitioners, the meditation is adequate to create a peace-inducing field which was questioned by a publication that discussed epilepsy.

The roots of Transcendental Meditation could have been influenced by Hinduism. Williamson, a new age researcher traces back the history of mantra words to old practice of Vedics in India. Mahareshi Yogi, the late founder of TM, taught his believers that some words or thoughts are important since they possess powers which can only be revealed through meditation. Moreover, he added that the thoughts when translated into words such as 'oooommmm' release vibrations that have power. Mainly, this is the underlying concept behind Transcendental Meditation. Because of this, people adapted meditation as a way of having a positive energy into their being.

Transcendental Meditation has also its critics since it claims to be scientific as contrary to its religious origins. Indeed, TM is still popular since many loyal followers attest to have derived health benefits from TM that calm both body and mind.
