If you are into alternative medicine, you may already be familiar with the use of herbs to cure certain illnesses. In fact, many may have started to appreciate the value of herbs with regards to the health benefits these bring.

A saw palmetto herb comes from a tree found in North America that is about 2 to 4 feet in height. It produces olive-sized berries and its leaves are fan-shaped. Saw palmetto herb may be prepared by extracting oil from its berries.

A saw palmetto herb is one that is considered to have many medicinal benefits – especially for the male species. It is most popular in providing relief for those with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy or BPH. BPH in simple terms means having an enlarged prostate and it also means the same as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Symptoms for BPH include urine leakage, frequent urination, weak urinary stream, difficulty to urinate and nighttime urination.

Although it is not surely known to reduce the prostate’s size, it can help by reducing inflammation and swelling of the prostate gland – thus addressing the symptoms that come with BPH. Saw palmetto herb does this by inhibiting the testosterone effects on the prostate.

Saw palmetto herb is also believed to help those with thyroid deficiencies. Coughs, asthma, chest congestion and bronchitis are also being remedied by it.
