Saw Palmetto & Pygeum Extract For Optimum Prostate Health

Saw palmetto & pygeum extract are supplements that are good for one’s prostate health. Each has its beneficial characteristics that treat BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). Both saw palmetto & pygeum extract have been used popularly in Europe. Saw palmetto is widely used in Germany, while pygeum extract in France and Italy.

Saw palmetto has been studied mainly in Germany and has been found to prevent formation of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) by inhibiting enzyme 5-alpha reductase from converting testosterone into its more potent form (DHT). It blocks the action of DHT to prostate receptors thru 3-ketosteroid reductase. It has been claimed that there are instances that show a decrease in prostate size with saw palmetto use, and improvements of urinary symptoms have been observed as well after several months of use. Typical dosage for this is 320 milligrams per day (preferably divided on an equal dose, twice daily) for a liposterolic extract containing 85 to 95 percent fatty acids and sterols.

Pygeum Extract has anti-inflammatory properties and it also limits androgen & prostaglandin synthesis. It has also shown positive effects in treating symptoms of BPH as frequent nighttime urination, and difficulty in urinating. It decreases the levels of testosterone and it increases prostatic secretions. This secretions help in alleviating urethra irritation. On clinical studies, a 100 milligrams to 200 milligrams of a 14% content of sterols and sitosterol – in 2 divided doses per day was used. Adverse effect is gastrointestinal upset.

The extract of saw palmetto & pygeum extract combined, creates a blend of herbs that is concentrated for treating individuals with BPH. There are products available in the market with these two substances combined. Available as well are products that have each substances separate.
