Asbestos diseases are serious disorders that are caused by exposure to the fibrous mineral. The disease develops when a person, working with asbestos containing materials, inhales asbestos particles in the air. Sometimes, however, asbestos exposure may occur right in the home when family members of the asbestos worker can come into contact with the deadly mineral through his work clothes and tools. Moreover, some old houses and buildings constructed between 1950 and 1970 may have been built using asbestos containing materials.
If your house was built before the 1970s, it is recommended that you check it for presence of asbestos. However, if your asbestos survey comes up positive but the asbestos containing material is in otherwise good condition, leave it as it is. The reason is that asbestos containing materials are not harmful per se. It is only when they are disturbed that the hazardous asbestos fibers become airborne, leaving you and other occupants of your household in danger of inhaling it.
The situation is different if the asbestos containing material is in bad condition or is in such a state that it has to be removed. In this case, it is far more harmful to leave the material alone than to remove it, even though removal may further cause the material to release asbestos fibers into the air.
For this reason, it is often advised that when it comes to repairing or removing asbestos containing materials, only licensed contractors who have undergone asbestos training should be allowed to do so. It is not recommended that you try to do the removal on your own, especially if you do not have some background in asbestos training.
Removing asbestos containing materials is a very delicate process and one that requires the most vigilant kind of discipline in order to minimize exposure both to the contractor and the occupants of the house.
A qualified contractor who has undergone asbestos training will know exactly what to do. He knows about all the proper safety precautions to take before and after removing the offending material. Moreover, he has the proper equipment and tools for removal such that the process is easy and quick.
In case you decide to hire a contractor with asbestos training to remove asbestos containing materials from your home, consider the following preliminary steps to take before the removal process:
* Inform members of your family, other occupants of the house, and friends who might stop by that you are having asbestos containing materials removed. That way, you can protect them from being exposed to the harmful effects of asbestos.
* If you plan to be at the scene during the removal, be sure to have protective clothing handy, including a respirator, mask, and gloves.
* To prevent the asbestos fibers from becoming airborne, contractors with asbestos training will often wet the surface as water can bind the fibers to the material. This method may damage your furniture and flooring, unless you clear them out of the room beforehand or cover them with plastic.
