Things To Know About Portable Power Generator

Portable power generator is a type of power generator that does not require permanent installation. These power generating machines are mostly used for powering homes and small establishments. Portable power generators are also used in places that have no utility power (campsites and mines). Generally, portable power generators are small in size and are mostly used to provide sufficient power for lightings, heating and cooling systems, computers and home theater systems.

Portable power generators use gasoline, diesel, and natural and propane gas to fuel its engine. The common portable power generators that are used nowadays use gasoline to fuel its engine. Gasoline powered portable generators costs less than other powered portable generators. However, the lifespan of the engine of the gasoline powered generators are shorter than its diesel counterpart. In addition to that, gasoline powered portable generators requires regular maintenance in order for its engine to run smoothly. Other than that, the shelf life gasoline fuel is short, thus it can not be stored for more than five months.

Diesel powered portable generators however are efficient in terms of fuel consumption. Recent studies show that diesel powered generators burn less fuel per kilowatt it generates. Diesel fuel costs less and can be store longer than gasoline. Also, diesel engines have longer lifespan than gasoline engines and only needs periodical maintenance. The main disadvantage of diesel powered portable generators is that the unit is difficult to start during cold seasons and its noise level is somewhat higher than gasoline engines.

Portable power generators come various sizes and wattage capacity. In choosing the right portable generator unit, it is important that you first find out the total wattage of all the electrical appliances that you are going to use during power failures. Remember, the portable generator unit must meet – if possible exceed – the starting wattage of the electrical appliances. The power generator must also meet the voltage capacity needed in order for the appliances to run (the standard household current in the United States is 110 volts).

Before you operate the power generator, don’t forget to read and follow what is written in the power generator’s operating manual. In order to have a safe and hassle free operation of the portable power generator, it is important that you do not exceed maximum load output of the power generator unit. Also it is advisable that the generator unit is operated at least once every six months on full load capacity to maintain its working condition.

Portable power generators are available on local hardware stores. Consult your local dealer on what brand suits you best.
