Advantages And Disadvantages Of Electric Motorcycles

Most motorcycles on the road are fueled by gasoline. But while this is the most popular kind of fuel, it is also common knowledge that the world is running out of oil. Thus, we now have an energy crisis that must be solved with the introduction of alternative fuel.

One kind of alternative fuel is generated electricity. Today, there are cars that are fueled with electric energy. The same is true with motorcycles. Presently, electric motorcycles are starting to emerge on the road.

An electric motorcycle is driven by an electric motor. Power supply for electric motors usually comes from batteries. But batteries have a lot of limitations. Recent advancements in technology, however, make it feasible, even advantageous, for motorcycles to be powered with fuel cells or petroleum-electric systems.

The most well known electric motorcycles come from Japan. Some of the most popular ones are Honda's FC Stack scooter and the Yamaha FC-AQEL. These motorcycles are powered by fuel cells. Petroleum-electric hybrids include the E-Cycle and Yamaha's Gen RYU.

Electric motorcycles are becoming popular because their riders do not have to buy expensive gasoline. Improving battery and fuel cell technology is also making this kind of motorcycle more viable for mass transportation.

Aside from the fact that high fuel costs could be avoided, electric motorcycles are nearly silent. Unlike normal motorcycles whose engines create a loud, annoying buzz or roar, only a soothing hum can be heard emanating from the engine while in operation. The soft sound won't violate any city ordinance regarding a vehicle's noise level.

Unlike their gasoline powered counterparts, electric motorcycles do not produce smoke and other pollutants. That means they are environment friendly. Because they do not produce smoke, electric motorcycles do not pose any health hazard. In fact, they can even be ridden indoors.

It is also very convenient. No trips are needed to the gasoline station for refueling. A rider can just plug a power cord attached to the motorcycle in an ordinary electrical outlet at home. Furthermore, the owner can save a lot of money because electric motorcycles are low maintenance. For example, he doesn't have to chance oil regularly.

But because the technology is new, electric motorcycles are also prone to some disadvantages. The most obvious of these disadvantages is the fact that these motorcycles have a shorter range due to limited battery or fuel cell technology. Also, while it takes just a few minutes for a standard motorcycle to be filled with gasoline, full charging an electric motorcycle will take hours.

Also, electric motorcycles are not as fast or powerful as their gasoline powered counterparts. Start-up costs are much higher than a standard motorcycle or scooter.

However, technology is improving. Soon, these kinds of vehicles will be a common sight on the road.
