Classes Of Performance Motorcycles

There are many kinds of motorcycles that are made for high speed and racing. But the fastest of them all is the performance motorcycle. It is also commonly known as a sport bike, or crotch rocket.

Performance motorcycles focus on speed, acceleration and maneuverability over comfort and carrying capacity. In fact, they can reach speeds up to 300 kilometers per hour! The power comes from high performance, powerful engines that are installed in a lightweight but rigid frame.

A performance motorcycle's braking system consists of high performance brake pads, multiple piston calipers and oversized vented rotors for immediate stopping power and for improved maneuverability. The tires are wide and large, enabling the motorcycle to grip the road better when cornering and leaning at great speeds.

Fairings of a performance motorcycle help reduce aerodynamic drag over high speed. They also protect the engine from fast moving debris.

The design requires that the rider has to lean over, with his feet towards the back and his hands forward. It is an awkward position that reduces drag but sacrifices comfort.

There are four classes of performance motorcycles. First, beginner sport bikes are available to introduce new riders to sport bike design. They are relatively inexpensive, lightweight and durable. Although not as powerful as those in full sized sport bikes, their engines are designed for durability. These motorcycles can be ridden by people of all heights and weights.

Super sport bikes are the second category of performance motorcycles. They are somewhat like the middleweight of these kinds of motorcycles. Usually, they have 600 to 800 cc engines and can produce more than a hundred horsepower. They are designed for optimal performance on a racing circuit.

The third category is super bikes, which is trademarked by Ducati Motor Holding. Characterized by large displacement engines which are around 800 cc to 1000 cc, they are heavier and more powerful than super sport bikes. They are very fast and can attain speeds of up to 140 miles per hour.

Hyper bikes are the fastest and the most powerful of all performance motorcycles. They are designed for top speed and acceleration. Powered by engines that displace 1100 cc to 1400 cc, they can reach speeds up to 180 miles per hour. When it comes to high speed, almost nothing can beat them. However, they are big, heavy and very expensive.

If you are a speed freak, then performance motorcycles are for you.
