Common Motorcycle Accessories

When purchased straight from the showroom, motorcycles have either few or no accessories at all.

But many owners don't like to leave their motorcycles at that. Most want to customize their bikes, either for aesthetic or practical purposes. That is why there is a big market for motorcycle accessories.

Motorcycle accessories not only make a motorcycle look good. Some accessories also improve the performance of the vehicle.

An example of a motorcycle accessory which both enhances the look and performance is a fairing. A fairing is a plastic or fiberglass shell that is placed over the frame. A fairing has several purposes. First, it protects the rider from the wind and weather, thus making the trip more comfortable for the rider. Second, it improves aerodynamics by reducing drag which is a huge factor that limits the speed of the motorcycle. Lastly, it protects engine parts from accidents or even theft. A fairing also protects the engine and some vital moving parts from debris and weather.

But that is just the practical purpose of this motorcycle accessory. Fairings are also repositories of art. Motorcyclists paint the fairings of their bikes with wild color patterns. Or, they stick decorative stickers on them. This makes their motorcycles look cool.

Heated grips and seats are also nice motorcycle accessories. Motorcycles do not have climate control or good protection from wind and weather. However, heated hand grips and seats can make the ride more comfortable. They are especially great when driving during the night and in cold weather. The heating system is powered by the motorcycle's battery. Some manufacturers make these motorcycle accessories as standard features in their products. However, many manufacturers sold them separately.

Another common motorcycle accessory is a luggage rack. This is an attachment onto which bags or other luggage can be tied or fastened. Having this on a bicycle eliminates the need for a rider to carry a backpack. Also, having a luggage rack adds to the carrying capacity of the motorcycle without compromising safety.

Another unique motorcycle accessory that can surely make a statement is a sidecar. A sidecar is a big one wheeled device that can seat a man. This sidecar is either bolted or welded to side of the motorcycle. This allows an extra person to ride comfortably at the side of the motorcycle. Another variation is the forecar, a two wheeled device attached to the front of the motorcycle.

These are just some of the most common motorcycle accessories available. Many other accessories such as trailer hitches, neon lights or motorcycle trunks can be purchased from a motorcycle supply store. It is up to the owner's preference, creativity and style as to what accessories he wants to be installed on his two wheeled vehicle.
