Off-Road Motorcycles: Catering To The Need For Speed Off-Roads

Off-road motorcycles are motorcycle types designed to run on dirt roads, hence the name. They are specialized motorcycles and differ from regular road motorcycles in terms of wheel size and treads, overall suspension and engine size and weight, as well as with their primary functions. Generally, off-road motorcycles have smaller, lightweight engines, compared to standard road motorcycles. They are also designed to have larger wheels, which are commonly complemented with rim-locks, and are also designed to have long suspensions with high ground clearance values.

Off-road motorcycles come in as very specialized motorcycles for racing events, resulting to some off-road motorcycles to be non-street legal, like models which don't come with headlights, for example. They are superstars in the field of various motorcycle sports, notably Motocross, Enduro, Rallies, Trials and Track Racing.

Motocross events would be impossible to take part in without off-road motorcycles, as Motocross is pretty much a race over jumps on a dirt track. Off-road motorcycles for Motocross have no need for excess weight, which could come in the form of lights, signal indicators, various instruments, plate numbers and passenger attachment equipment. Off-road motorcycles for Motocross events are known to be powered by two or four stroke engines, with capacities ranging from 125 cc to 500cc, with these respective values all up to the biker.

Enduro events also require off-road motorcycles, as Enduro events are long distance competitions which go through forests and other rough terrain. The event basically requires the same off-road motorcycles which could be used in Motocross events.

Rallies, also needing off-road motorcycles, are similar to Enduro events, differing only with the fuel requirement figures. Trials, also needing off-road motorcycles, are competitions where balance and control are given more focus, rather than speed. Because of this, weight concerns aren't that given much emphasis, resulting to most off-road motorcycles designed for this type of off-road competition to be street legal, headlights, signal lights and all.

The Honda XR650R would be a good example of an off-road motorcycle. Famous for shining in any desert event, the Honda XR650R is quite a machine, being hailed as the toughest off-road motorcycle available in the market. It isn't exactly street legal, as certain "rules" aren't built with it, like headlights, but as an off-road motorcycle, it performs.
Another good example for off-road motorcycles would be the KTM 200 XC, which comes with a single cylinder 2-stroke engine. Its fuel capacity runs to 2.25 gallons, and comes with a six speed transmission system, with an engine displacement value of 193cc.

Other off-road motorcycles are available from major motorcycle brands such as Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki.

It all boils down to what a biker prefers, as well as what off-road event off-road motorcycles have to deal with.
