Some Social Aspects Of Motorcycles

Motorcycles are two wheeled vehicles with a single track and powered by an engine. Coming in different styles and designs for different purposes, motorcycles are popular means of transportation. In fact, they are the cheapest and the most numerous forms of motorized mode of transportation in many parts of the world such as Bangkok or China.

But motorcycles are more than just vehicles. They have become part of our everyday lives. In fact, the introduction of this vehicle on the streets has affected our society so much.

For example, motorcycles have been connected with subcultures. Subcultures are like clubs consisting of people who enjoy doing the same thing. Most motorcycle subcultures are close social groups like Britain's café racers, the 1960's Mods and Rockers and leather clad thugs. Some of these groups are even associated with crime.

Motorcycle groups and organizations are popular. Motorcyclists may group together because they live in the same place. Or, they may decide to build an organization because they enjoy motorcycle activities. There are even groups that are organized because their members' motorcycles are of specific models. A perfect example of this kind of organization would be the Harley Owner's Group which is exclusive for motorcycle enthusiasts who have Harley motorcycles.

A lot of motorcycle groups organize events and rides for charities. Some even hold international rallies. Such events attract thousands of riders who share stories and interests or show off their motorcycles.

Another reason why motorcycles are popular road vehicles is the fact that they offer a huge degree of mobility. Aside from being cheaper than cars, motorcycles are cost efficient, guzzling only a small amount of fuel per 15 or even 20 miles. Unlike cars, they are cheaper and easier to maintain.

Motorcycles are easier to navigate through traffic. In fact, in many places, they can lane split. This allows motorcycles to squeeze in places between vehicles. Through lane splitting, they can easily weave in and out through slow moving or stationary traffic.

This means motorcycles also help in decongesting traffic. In fact, in England, motorcycle riders do not need to pay the £8 per day congestion charge. In many places in the world, motorcycles do not have to pay toll bridge charges. Some cities allow these vehicles to use bus lanes. Also, many establishments provide free parking for motorcycle riders.

Truly, motorcycles are here to stay as part of our culture and society.
