Big binoculars are probably one of the most misunderstood things in the market. It is a given fact that big binoculars cost a lot. Well, they should. They have to be more durable and their glasses have to be more sturdy. Why? Because these are more prone to wear due to the difficulty in handling. Since they're big (over 50mm), their major drawback is their weight. But of course, you are not expected to carry them around often. Otherwise, big binoculars are not what you need.

The size of the binocular's lenses is the one that determines the brightness of the binocular. Big binoculars have large lenses. Therefore, they are able to draw more light than those small ones. For binoculars with the same magnification, comparing their brightness can be done by squaring the front lenses' diameters. Hence, an 8x40 binocular (402 = 1600) gathers light over two times than that of the 8x25 binocular (252 = 625). Also, it means that it can perform better in dim light than the other one.

Resolution, or the binocular's capability of displaying tiny details, and the image size, are said to be inversely proportional to one another. In simple terms, the larger the lens, the smaller are the details that it can display.

Big binoculars still provide a lot of advantages. For one, they can give us a clearer image of extremely far objects that hand held binoculars cannot. They are known to possess the sharpest optics, which are essential in showing the images with great accuracy.

Generally, big binoculars are considered observation binoculars. They are mainly used for astronomy or long range observations for long periods of time. The big binoculars are more comfortable to use and are more friendly to the eyes than the telescopes. The use of binoculars in these sizes, necessitate these to be mounted on tripods for weight reasons. Also, the tripod will ensure that they are kept stable.

Big binoculars are expensive. So if you're just stargazing is a mere hobby and you still have to squeeze it into your hectic schedule, you can settle for those hand held models. But if astronomy is a passion and money is not an issue, by all means – go buy yourself one.
