Life Centered Career Education

About 600,000 children in the world are born with special needs. Most of these needs can’t be met and satisfied just within the individual’s home. Yes, families alone may not be able to help these special children develop the healthy concepts, attitudes and behaviors that are necessary for them to become responsible and productive citizens. It is for this reason actually that the Life Centered Career Education (LCCE) was developed and introduced to the public.

The Life Centered Career Education is a set of program that aims to help children and youth with special requirements to be productive and responsible in their chosen field. The students taught under this learning program are those with learning disabilities, mild mental disabilities, and those who are at risk and in need of a more functional, challenging and engaging curriculum.

Speaking of curriculum, the Life Centered Career Education maintains a curriculum that includes a number of different training programs that generally provide the students proper education and training to develop their own abilities and skills that would be necessary in today’s highly challenging society. The programs under the LCCE curriculum aim to teach and make the students aware on the best possible way of functioning independently and productively as members of the family and society. It’s no wonder then that in Life Centered Career Education, the learning process includes training in cooperation with the student’s friends or family members.

There are three major components included in Life Centered Career Education. The first is the so-called “daily living skills”, which basically works to teach the special students in how to properly manage their personal finances, personal needs, responsibilities and duties as members of the family, household management, food preparation, leisure activities, as well as their duties as citizens.

The second component of Life Centered Career Education is dubbed as “personal social skills” and according to LCCE itself, this is designed to assist the special students in developing a sense of self-awareness, self-confidence, socially responsible behaviors, good interpersonal skills, and independence. This component even pays greater emphasis on developing good decision making and communication skills.

The last component of Life Centered Career Education has something to do with occupational guidance and preparation. Well, this component is centered much on allowing the students to learn that there is an opened door to occupational possibilities and choices in today’s competitive society. Also included in the aim is the ideal on developing the appropriate work habits, seeking and maintaining employment, physical and manual skills, and job competencies.

All of these components are strongly maintained by Life Centered Career Education knowing that they can surely help students in developing what they should need to be. And with such great objectives ahead of them, it’s no wonder that the Life Centered Career Education has gained wider acceptance throughout the United States and the world.
