North Dakota Career And Technical Education Advisory Committee Guidelines

The North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee guidelines include its main purpose which is to strengthen the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs it provides. The advisory committee exists to assists, support, advice, and advocate for career and technical education, and has no legislative, programmatic, or administrative authority and is for advisory only. They work helpfully with school officials in the preparation and implementation of committee work. The members of this advisory are volunteers who contribute expert knowledge of the career missions and proficiency requirements for specific occupations, and serve a particular career and technical program or a merged committee may support several programs.

The Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee guidelines of advising, assisting, and support and advocate hold the following duties:

* They advise by assessing particular areas of the Career and Technical Education program with suggestions intended to improve specific content areas which may include updating of curriculum, industry standards, and purchase of instructional materials or equipment to update classrooms and adopt safety policies. These suggestions should be opened in writing to the administration.
* They assist by helping the administrator or instructor to implement specific activities which may include setting up scholarship programs, judging competitive skills events, or acquiring media coverage for special events.
* They support and advocate by promoting Career and Technical Education programs all through the community which may include marketing and promoting through talking to legislators, speaking for career and technical education at board meetings, recognizing industry and community resources , arranging for publicity, and writing articles for local newspapers

Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee guidelines are guides to having an effective committee. Effective committees show efficiency if they know the needs and develop a plan of action; set priorities for action instead of trying to do everything; they target particular activities that will have the biggest impact on Career and Technical Education; and they ensure that they have the accurate expertise on the committee to work on the matters that have been recognized for the year.

The Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee guidelines also requires that every program have an advisory committee but the committee can be merged to serve several Career and Technical Education programs with at least three representatives from each program unless it requires a separate committee to serve a particular program. The committee should meet at least twice a year.

The Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee guidelines also includes on how to establish an advisory committee which includes: being established by an instructor and/or administrator with technical backing given by the State CTE staff and having a unique organizational structure and procedures developed by the committee members outlined in their bylaws; the size of the committee should be large enough to reflect diversity of the community but small enough to be managed efficiently; a three-year rotational term of service permits for both change and continuity.
