Standing Out In An Online Job Search Market

When it comes to applying for jobs online it is not enough to be a well qualified candidate. You also have to find a way to may yourself really stand out. The nature of online job searches makes it incredibly easy for job seekers around the world to access these job advertisements so the competition for each job opening will be strong. Additionally, the current state of the economy has flooded the job market with more job seekers than ever. With unemployment rates at a new high and large numbers of highly qualified candidates now unemployed it is understandable that employers are inundated with responses from highly qualified candidates when they post a job opening online. This article will provide advice for how you can make sure you stand out against the competition.

Just like in the real world, the way to stand out online is to make a good first impression. Years ago when job seekers where on the hunt for a new job, they would dress in a nice suit and make sure they were carefully groomed before heading to potential places of employment. There was no guarantee the employer would even have opportunities but there was the potential for the job seeker to be introduced to someone who could assist them in their job search so they always dressed to impress. While you may be able to search for jobs online from the comfort of your home, you should always behave professionally in your online job search effort. Each email you send to a prospective employer should be grammatically correct, should be formatted properly and should be polite and professional. It may be tempting to use more relaxed language and not proofread your email because it seems like a more casual atmosphere but employers are still looking for employees who make a good first impression by behaving professionally.

Tailoring resumes and cover letters for each job you apply for is also very important and can help you stand out in the online job search market. With so much competition for each and every job, pat resumes which are generic and were not written specifically for a particular job will not help you to stand out. Even if you are highly qualified for a particular job it is important to remember there will always be other candidates who are just as well qualified. If these other candidates take the time and effort necessary to tailor their resumes and cover letters to showcase the desired skills and experience level the employer is seeking they are much more likely to get the job or at least be invited to interview for the position than those who do not make this effort.

Finally, you can really help yourself to stand out in the online job market by seeking out previous employers who are willing to provide you with a letter of recommendation. Only consider seeking these types of letters from employers who are likely to speak very highly of you and give you a recommendation that will help you to stand out. While many other job seekers will also be able to provide letters of recommendation you can make yourself stand out in how you include these letters. First of all forget the phrase, “References: Furnished upon Request.” This tag line appears on the bottom of just about every resume and does not help you to stand out at all. Instead you could select a quote or two from these letters and include them in your resume. You can still provide the potential employer with the actual letters of recommendation but including a line or two from the letters will help you to stand out when applying for jobs online.
