The RS Computer Shoe: A Smart Puma Running Shoe

This large heel spur of the right shoe actually houses a small battery powered circuit board and acts as a console. This circuit board powers a pedometer, which is an instrument that records the distance that a person covers on foot. It does this by responding to the body motion at each step.
The console has a black “on test” and a red “reset button.” A receptacle in the heel accepts a cable that can connect the RS Computer shoe to an Apple computer. When you purchase this Puma running shoe, you will also get a disc which has software that you need to install. Through this software, you can enter your data, review or edit monthly goals and review monthly or annual statistics of your run. Initial calibration requires entering your caloric data and your stride measurement on the software. You can also further calibrate the software by performing 15 initial runs with the shoe. After the runs, you can plug the shoe into the computer. Thereafter, the software calculates distance, time and calories burned during that run.
The RS Computer shoe software can store 6 years worth of running logs. It allows you to measure your actual runs against projected runs.
The console on the left shoe is empty. Its cover is secured to the heels by two screws. This compartment can store loose change, keys, an ID and any other small stuff you might want to bring with you.
Because of the RS Computer Shoe’s high price, this Puma running shoe cannot be purchased from an athletic footwear store. To get one, you have to call Puma who will then inform you of its sales representative in your area. You can also order the shoe through Puma’s Locker Room site.
The RS Computer performs well. However, there are also some problems reported by consumers. One of the main complaints is that the software can only be used with Apple computers. Therefore, those who have IBMs or Mackintoshes, who comprise a large segment of the potential market, cannot use it.
