PC Tune Up: Back Up Your Data

If you want to keep hold of any information on your computer, you had better find a way to back it up before anything bad should happen. The chances of both of them crashing at the same time is close to never, so you should always have your data on one or the other.

If you have never installed your own hard drive, don't worry. It is a very simple and painless task. The other hard drive won't have to cost an arm and a leg, either. The best thing for you to do is get down to your favorite discount computer supply store. You will want to buy two items for the process. The first is a removable hard disk tray and your new hard drive. The removable disk tray is more for convenience (they make it easy to slide the hard drive in and out of the computer and can even be locked incase you are worried about theft) and the hard drive will need to be one that is best fitting for your needs. If you are unsure what to get, ask an associate for help.

When you get home, you will want to turn off your computer, in the safe mode. Then, it will be time to open the hard shell of the computer's tower. (Most are attached with an easy to remove knob. Remove the knob and slide the loose compartment off.) Install your new drive according to the instructions. (You may actually need a screwdriver for the installation process.) Once you have it installed, just put the hard shell back on and restart the computer. You should be good to go!

Once you have installed the second hard drive, you will be able to back up your data and your computer will also begin to run more quickly. In order to properly back up your data, please be sure to transfer the data from your old hard drive to the new and not the other way around. If you do not, you will erase the material you are trying to save!
