Repairing Your Credit - Must You Get Help To Do It?

If you need to repair your credit, you may wonder if you really need to get help. Repairing your credit may seem like a challenging job. The experts know how - maybe they can do a better job at fixing your credit. Maybe…but maybe they'll charge you an arm and a leg for something you could easily do by yourself. Lets weight the pros and cons.

Pros Of Using A Credit Repair Service

If you pay a company to repair your credit, they can handle dealing with the credit bureaus and agencies on your behalf. You might never have to talk directly with any of them - a charming idea given the grace and elegance of most collection agencies!

They might be able to process the paperwork a bit faster than you would, since they do it on a full-time basis. If you do it yourself, it can be easy for repairing your credit to end up on the bottom of your to do list. A company who is paid to handle your credit might be able to keep the paper flowing faster.

A specialty company might know some of the tricks of the trade for improving your credit score. They have easy access to the legalese that needs to accompany the more tricky items you want to have removed from your credit

Cons To Getting Help To Repair Your Credit

First of all, even if you decide to get help to repair your credit, the bottom line is YOU. It's your credit, and you have a vested interest in getting a better credit score. When the credit repair company might make an attempt to (for example) help repair your credit card debt, you are the one who will be responsible for whatever the outcome is.

Generally speaking, credit bureaus are more cooperative with consumers who are trying to improve their credit than companies working on behalf of consumers. Unless your company is going to write letters pretending to be you, they will be at a disadvantage in this area.

If you get help to repair your credit, the company will need your input. Unless they plan to dispute everything on your credit report - some do - your company will need to know from you which items are not yours. They'll also need the documentation to prove your side of the issue - that an item isn't yours, etc.

Finally, remember that getting help to repair your credit isn't free. There will be a fee - sometimes based on income, but usually a flat fee, regardless of what they accomplish for you. Factor that in when you make your decision as to whether you should get help to repair your credit.
