Breeding dogs can be one of the most interesting and exciting experiences you can ever have in life. Seeing the puppies coming out of the mother's organ and starting to move softly and carefully is in fact rewarding. However, attached with this exciting experience are certain risks that tend to occur once the breeding is handled without much attention and proper care. Yes, breeding dogs can be frustrating and may even produce failure if not done rightly.

The Right Time to Breed

Breeding dogs can only be done at the right time. But when? The possibility for a successful breeding comes in following the sign of “heat”. Most female dogs experience heating (estrus) every six or seven months even prior to their first year of age. However, during this time, not all female dogs are well-developed. Their body may not yet ready for conceiving and nursing, so why take them into risks? The best time to breed dogs is when they reach their full growth. For some breeds like Irish Woldhound and St. Bernard, this won't occur until they reached about more than two years of age.

Perhaps the best thing to do to determine the right time for breeding dogs is to contact an expert veterinarian who knows about breeding and whelping the man's best friend. Your veterinarian can take certain examinations or tests on your dog to determine if she is already ready for breeding and nursing.

Moves to Take for a Successful Breeding

So your dog reached her full growth and is now ready for breeding. Well, the next step you can do is to find her best mate. Remember, however, that male dogs can turn to be successful breeders when the environments they are in are familiar to them. So if you are considering breeding dogs and you've got the female, it would be best if you'll bring her to the male dog's home. But make sure that she is fertile for the breeding can be critical for her. The fertility period of the female dogs may occur during the 10th through the 14th day of the heating. There are some female dogs though that experience fertility as early as the 3rd day of the estrus, or as late as the 18th day of the said change.
