Nursing Certification

So you want to work as a certified nurse in the United States or anywhere abroad. Well, there is one main asset that you need to get – the nursing certification.

The nursing certification has long been considered as a process by which a nongovernmental agency works to authenticate the individual’s qualifications and knowledge of practice based upon certain standards that may possible be predetermined. The validation may takes place at a defined functional or clinical area of nursing.

Nursing Certification Purposes

There are certain purposes of nursing certification. On the most basic, the nongovernmental agencies develop the certification to assure the public that the nurse serving the community has met all the requirements needed in the practice. This is simply a way of ensuring that the nurse has completed all the criteria for eligibility which will help him or her earn a specific credential.

The nursing certification is also considered to promote the development of areas of specialty under the field of nursing which can only be done by establishing minimum competency standards and recognizing those who have met and completed the standards – the certified nurses.

Nursing Certification and RN License

Contrary to what many people believe, the nursing certification is not the same with the registered nurse license. The latter specifically indicates that a nurse has acquired a knowledge which is but entry-level to provide care for patients. The registered nurse license is simply the minimum requirement for the professional nurses, and it doesn’t provide the proof that the professional nurse has obtained and acquired knowledge that is beyond the required minimum. This is basically where the nursing certification takes effect.

The nursing certification is a voluntary process, however. Unlike the registered nurse license, it shows that a professional nurse has developed specialty knowledge that is beyond the entry level. For instance, those who have studied in oncology and acquired certification for it are the ones who have met or surpassed the requirements for practice in cancer care. They have also completed their education in oncology and have earned a tested knowledge of the specialty.

So being more than just a registered nurse license, the nursing certification is definitely beneficial for both the patients and the workers themselves. On the part of the patients, for instance, they will be assured that the nurse taking care of them is nor just a caregiver, but a qualified caregiver. This, of course, means peace of mind and strengthened confidence. And, on the part of the workers, the best benefit that the nursing certification can offer them is that they will be assured that they can handle their role to the best way possible knowing that they have the knowledge and the expertise to back them up.
