Documentary Film School

A documentary film is any form of cinematic material whether for the silver screen or television where documentation of real-life situations, places, and events as well as and commentaries are shown through a series of film shots. Some documentary films have presenters while some simply make use of voiceovers.

Although documentary films are devoid of the usual cinematic displays, it serves a distinct purpose compared to other entertainment media materials. In essence, documentary films have their own elements for them to be effective propaganda materials.

Many film schools offer programs that emphasize on documentary filmmaking. In a documentary film school, students will discover the many aspects in making documentary films, which is different from other film programs. The Metropolitan Film School, for example, does not have a separate documentary film school. Instead the documentary programs are under a larger department.

Currently, the Metropolitan Film School, located in London, is offering part-time documentary filmmaking, taught as an evening class for two evenings pre week (from 7:00 pm to 10:00) over a period of three terms each lasting 14 weeks including weekend shootings. The programs will teach students on the right approaches to camera, sound, and editing within the context of a documentary.

The MFS will be offering full time documentary programs beginning January 2007. There are still no plans of putting up a separate documentary film school. However, students will be assured of the necessary trainings they need to undertake to become professional documentary filmmakers. The Metropolitan Film School knows for a fact that most documentary filmmakers today are independently work - they shoot, direct, and edit the materials themselves. The MFS makes sure each student in the documentary programs learns to face the hurdles, even when it is not a documentary film school.

The MFS, under the documentary programs, aims for the students to have a grasp of understanding on documentary filmmaking as it is viewed today, the history of the genre, its many forms, and the possible and existing markets of the current times. Moreover, graduates of the programs should be proficient in operating media equipment like the camera, and the how-to's in sound recording, lighting for particular scenes, and editing using Final Cut Pro.

Nonetheless, making an effective documentary film is not limited to the technical aspects alone. Thus, MFS makes sure students will learn how to research a subject and what subject to film, to write a proposal, and the treatment to be used.

Although far from being a documentary film school and despite the few documentary film schools in the world a documentary film remains an artistic expression as well as an effective informative material.
