Top Film Schools
Selecting which film school to study in is no easy task. Getting into the top film schools in the U.S. is much harder. With the film industry going a step further each year in terms of innovation and demand for talents du jour, top film schools in the U.S. have responded by implementing sterner admission processes, and some higher tuition fees. After all, aside from the promising career in the dream factory, it's also one of the highest earning industries.
Four of the top film schools (for the Master of Fine Arts degree in film production) were ranked by deans and senior faculty as offering top programs in the said discipline and are located in the state of California, the world's entertainment hub. The New York University (NYU) and University of Southern California (USC) are the two top film schools followed closely by the American Film Institute (AFI) and University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), both ranking second, and lastly the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
Applicants for the undergraduate programs of these top film schools have been facing tight competition especially that the admission rate is very low. The Tisch School of the Arts at NYU is comprised of three learning institutes focused on giving the highest quality training in the visual and performing arts. Aspirants will have to undergo a highly selective admission process involving talent, personality and intellectual tests and evaluations.
The USC School of Cinema-Television also screens applicants thoroughly, which include evaluating GPA, standardized test scores, other aptitude exams, and interviews. The school has a multi-racial student population. The school offers programs in a variety of areas related to film and television industries. Since 1973, each year is not completed without having USC alumni being nominated in the Academy Awards.
The UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television (TFT) admits only about 10 percent of its total applicants due to limited slots. The university can accommodate only 310 slots for the freshman year at TFT. UCLA has produced some of the widely celebrated personalities and talents in the entertainment industry. Aspiring filmmakers, meanwhile, are and will be facing intensive training and education covering history, theory, and the entire aspects in filmmaking and the broadcast media.
The American Film Institute remains one of the country's top film schools and offers students nothing but excellence in the field of arts of film, television, and digital media. The programs at AFI are designed to meet the growing demands for talents in the entertainment industry. Its alumni include Carl Franklin, Ed Zwick, Jon Avent, as well as other present top filmmakers.
The CalArts offers a Baccalaureate degree and Master's degree in the visual and performing arts. The degree programs at CalArts include art, dance, film, music, and video, that include a program pioneer in Character Animation.
