Getting Started With Home School

If you are considering a home school program for your child but are still new to this type of concept, here are some things that you need to keep in mind to put you on the right track as well as to ensure that your child’s home school learning goes well and effectively.

Know your philosophy. Whether your reasons are academic, health, philosophical, religious or for safety purposes, you should first understand why you want to teach your child at home. This is important so that you can effectively come up with your own home school program that would effectively teach your child.

Know local regulations. Legislations on education may vary from one state to another. For instance, some states require a stricter curriculum while others stipulate age as a requirement in teaching home school and others. It would be smart to know the requirements for a home school program at a school district in your locality.

Learn from other homeschool parents. Know their success stories and learn valuable tips and information on home schooling. You can find them in your local community groups or on the Internet. However, remember that what works for them may not work for you so may want to discuss with them your own home schooling approach as well.
Be flexible, organized and patient. Home schooling your child entails you to be not just a teacher but a parent as well. However, these two roles may clash during the lesson proper. If you are the parent who spoils and gives in to the whims and caprices of your child, then you must keep in mind your role as a teacher who should be tough yet patient in teaching your child so that s/he can excel.

Nurture a bond with your child. In a home school program, both the child and the teacher/parent have to work as a team. Discuss with your child how you want to work out your goals together to avoid problems on either end.

Don’t miss out on social interaction. Give your child the opportunity to socialize and interact with other people even when s/he is home schooling. You may not know it, but a home school child can get as much social interaction as with any traditionally schooled child as long as you don’t completely confine him in your home. Get your child involved in activities that encourage social interaction.

Listen to your child. While a parent has the authority in decision-making, allow your child to make his/her own choice. If your child wants to attend a regular school even if you want him/her to remain at home school, talk it out together to arrive at a decision that is best for both of you.
