Bridging Barriers - The Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing


The oldest school of nursing in Connecticut - the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing or the BSHN has been offering quality educational prep programs in Registered Nursing, Surgical Technology, Perioperative Care, and sterile processing, all within the dynamic setting of a full service school- medical health center, which enhances both the intellectual and professional skills of its nursing student practitioners.

Students of the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing have the choosing option between taking a Diploma Degree or the Associate Degree in Nursing in place of the 4- year degree course in BSN/ Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The Associate Degree in Nursing is a 2 to 3- years nursing program wherein credits in non-nursing courses and nursing courses earned at the community college are transferred in from the college or university (partner Housatonic Community College) continuing to a higher BSN learning or licensed practical application. The Diploma in Nursing program on the other hand, is a nursing course study that focuses learning in a hospital- based setting. Nonetheless, both options will also lead to qualifying for the NCLEX-RN (Registered Nurse) licensure as with successfully graduating from a BSN course. Although some jobs may require experience as a RN and a BSN, most entry level jobs as a RN still accept all three educational preparations. And although most students prefer the Associate Degree program, the salary, job opportunities, and educational advancement for both the Associate Degree and the Diploma graduate are still comparable.
