Planning To Speed Read

How to Read Faster

When you plan, you have goals backing the plans that will help you advance in your mission to read faster. Now that you have your plans set, you must realize you will sometimes need to make changes. For instance, some writer's will tell you using your fingers to zigzag while reading can help you read faster. What this reader is lacking, is research. If the writer had researched the information, thus he/she would have learnt that using motor readers skills could hinder a person from reading faster. The author would also have learnt that sight-readers often read the fastest. While the author constructed a nice piece of material, we see planning, goals, and research missed. Research helps you to discover the truths.

Now that you have plans to speed-read you can go on a truth-seeking hunt to discover techniques that will help you read faster. Remember, we are all different, thus what may work best for others, may not work best for you.

Reading is a start in speed-reading. When you read you practice while acquiring skills to comprehend. Comprehension is one of the tools speed-readers employ to read faster. Yet, readers do not develop comprehension without reading and reading some more. The more you read, the better you will comprehend. We can provide you a few helpful tests to build you comprehension and reading speed in this article.

Before starting the test, prepare to time your reading. You have 15 seconds to brisk through the material. I recommend that you preview and review the information before starting.

Test:
Title: The Movements of Speed-Readers
Subtitle: The Slashing and Criss-Crossing Readers
Some speed-readers recommend that you use either the slashing hand movement, or the criss-cross hand movement while learning to speed-read. Slash movements is using the middle and index fingers simultaneously while you brisk through materials. Criss-cross movements mean that you move your middle finger, left-to-right while moving downward in motion and reading. While the information could help few to learn speed-reading, the fact is motor readers rarely exceed the speed of a skilled sight-reader.

Some of the best advice comes from those who tell you to choose easy-reading materials when starting to speed-read. Since, speed-reading includes drills, you can move along faster while reading materials that are easier to understand. While learning to speed-read you should also set up a time chart, which can help you to move along in speed-reading, since time charts provide you inspiration to progress.

Sample Time Sheet:

My Reading Rate: Amount of Reading Material
Less than 500 Words per minute (WPM) Must read 1/3 of a single page

If you are able to read as much as 1800 WPM, then you can comfortably read at least three pages without problems.

Still, speed-readers should use the sight-reader techniques when learning to read fast. Sight-readers use visual aids rather than sound to comprehend information. Most sight-readers will review graphics, charts, pictures, and the like before reading starts. The visual aids help them to enhance their comprehension level, as well as help them to read the material. On the other hand, some sight-readers read information without preparing. It depends on the person, but sometimes this strategy works well for those attempting to read fast. Thus, slashing and criss-crossing movements as recommended, is only teaching motor-readers how to work at their own pace. We still need skills that will advance the reader to read materials at faster speeds.

Once you finish reading record your timing. If you exceeded 15 seconds, do not worry. Just try harder next time to achieve a period. Setting a time to read can help you to read faster as well. Check your plans!
