Since Bluetooth technology is an open platform, every SIG member has already been given permission to use Bluetooth technology in his or her devices. There are three different levels of membership, each of them having different benefits. Those three levels are: promoter, associate, and adopter.
The Promoter Members are the one's who are most engaged in the technical development of Bluetooth wireless technology. This includes a wide variety of cell phone companies and computer companies among other things. The main responsibility of the promoter members is to become engaged in the calculated and scientific development of a variety of Bluetooth technology. These members will sit on the Board of Directors as well as the Bluetooth Qualification Review Board. This gives them access to all the great things that will be coming in Bluetooth technology in the next few years. Like the name states, promoter members are there to help guide and promote the new waves of Bluetooth technology.
The next level is an Associate Member. Although every type of member gets to use the Bluetooth specifications and trademark licenses, the Associate Members are actually involved in the development process of Bluetooth technology. First they get to help with ideas about where the technological enhancements should come from, and they get to review the specifications before the public even has a chance to look at them. One of the downsides is that to be an Associate Member you must pay an annual fee.
Lastly there are the Adopter Members. The Adopter Members are those ones who are allowed to use published Bluetooth specifications and the Bluetooth trademarks, but they won't have the chance to influence or get early access to unpublished Bluetooth specifications. On the upside, Adopter Members do not pay an annual fee. On the downside, they have the least control over where the technology is headed between any of the members.
