Have you ever looked in the Sunday paper or an advertisement from your local electronics store and seen a cheap portable GPS system with a note that says, "Just as good as X brand," with X brand being the newest, most expensive GPS system on the market. How can they make those claims? Why would the newest, most expensive GPS system have the same capabilities as the least expensive one? That's impossible, right? But actually it's not.

Take cell phones for example. The latest model cell phone, probably the iPhone, can do a lot that most phones can't. They can play music, you can surf the internet and you can even take pictures and videos and everything else that they could fit inside that little device. However, isn't a cell phone meant to make and receive phone calls? Who cares about all those other bells and whistles? Apparently a lot of consumers do because the iPhone continues to sell out even though the launch date was months ago. When it comes to GPS systems, a GPS is supposed to get you to and from your destination by telling you the route and where to turn, etc. The extra bells and whistles are for consumers to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest model. By comparing portable GPS systems, however, you can spend your money on the model that does only what you want it to do.

The Extras = More Money

When you begin to compare portable GPS systems, you'll see that, just like cell phones, that basic ability is still there. All cell phones make and receive calls, and all GPS systems get you to and from your destination. However, when you compare portable GPS systems, unlike cell phones, the extras that they add to each model improve upon that basic ability. Comparing portable GPS systems will reveal models that do what the others cannot, that will actually improve their driving experience or will help them find new things, and in more interesting ways. For example, some GPS systems will detect traffic jams, some will tell you of accidents along the way and some will keep up to date of construction and other information that could hinder your traveling experience. All of these extras, however, just cost more money for you, the consumer.

It all comes down to what you want in a GPS system. Compare portable GPS systems and try not to get sucked into the allure of having the best-and most expensive. Instead, get only what you need. Who cares if you get stuck in traffic? You'll get out before you know it. But by avoiding the most expensive one that detects traffic jams and accidents, you can save most of your money by buying the cheaper of the two and you'll still get to your destination one way or the other; only you'll have more money in your pocket while you're doing it.
