GPS Tracking has gone mainstream these days. Though it was developed years ago for military purposes, GPS tracking systems are now available to almost everyone.

The GPS tracking systems come in two different types. The first type is what they call as active tracking, while the other is passive tracking. Well, each type actually takes advantage of GPS technology to provide the people highly accurate location reports. Perhaps the difference between these two types lies on the fact that the information is delivered in different ways.

Of the two types of GPS tracking systems, the active tracking, also known as GPS real time tracking, is the most commonly used device. On its most basic, it possesses an ability to track positioning data and broadcast this data to the GPS user in real time, hence the name. Also, it is interesting to know that the GPS real time tracking systems gather positioning data with the use of the GPS technology, and then they send data to the end user through a traditional cellular phone networks.

GPS Real Time Tracking When There is No Cell Phone Coverage

Perhaps one best asset of GPS real time tracking is that it can operate everywhere. It works even in oceans and deserts, but the cell phone modem has to be replaced by a satellite modem. This way, the position information can be sent over a communication satellite network.

However, there is still a disadvantage to that. The GPS real time tracking devices are most sophisticated and bigger than the GPS tracking devices with a cell phone modem. And, the devices as well as the service are much more expensive.

GPS Real Time Tracking For Cars

The most common use of GPS real time tracking devices is in car. The systems usually transmit the location positions along with other additional information, such as speed and direction of the vehicle, and this information is transmitted directly to the user.

There is actually a lot of different GPS real time tracking systems available for cars and vehicles. The availability, however, depends on the country, the GPS provider, and other factors. Also, the GPS location data of the unit can be transmitted via mobile or cell phone systems, radio communication and satellite systems as well.

Basic Components of Real Time Car Tracking Systems

GPS real time tracking systems are composed of three main parts: The Mobile GPS unit; communication networks; and geographic maps.

With these components, the systems are just easy to install. The GPS receiver and cellular modem will just be fastened to the target. Then, a GPS antenna attaches with a magnet to the underside of the bumper cover and a miniature magnet mount cellular antenna fastens to the frame. The power is supplied by a direct connection to a vehicle power or by a field replaceable battery pack. The car monitoring system can then be accessed from a personal computer even at your own home or office using a GPS real time tracking software. With the software, the location of the vehicle will be shown on a digital map of your area showing movement as it occurs.
