Creating Your Own Home Cinema Projector Screen

The steps to making a home cinema projector screen are very easy if you take your time. The main reason that people have difficulty in making a home cinema projector screen is time and patience. You need to do each step properly and wait the correct amount of time. This is the most important thing and it does not take a master craftsman or artist to make you own home cinema projector screen.

The first thing you need is a spot for the screen. I recommend using as flat a wall with as much open area as you can find. The best thing to do, if you can, is to create the wall from scratch. To do this you can either take down an existing wall or build one up. In the center where the home cinema projector screen will go make sure that there is only a single piece of drywall. You may need to hunt down a large piece for this, but hunt around and you should be able to find one. The biggest size that wallboard comes in is 4 feet by ten feet. I like to stack two of these on top of each other so there is only the single seem.

Once the board is up make sure that you tape and mud it very carefully. Use one direction long strokes to smooth out the mud for a nice flat finish. Use a medium grit sandpaper to file the side down until it blends completely with the wall. Also, make sure any screws you are using are sunk completely into the board and then mud over them with a nice even coat. Wait for the mud to dry completely then sand it down.

Now you should have a nice pallet for your screen. I would find out what the best distance and size is for your projector then measure out the optimum size screen on the board. After that is done the next step in making your own home cinema projector screen is to paint it on. For this I like to use paint from Behr called Silverscreen. Do one very light coat with brushstrokes going vertical. Wait for it to dry completely, and then do a second coat with brushstrokes going horizontal. Again wait for that to dry completely. Apply a thin coat of Silverscreen mixed with flat white in a 1 to 1 ration vertically. Wait for that to dry, and then apply the same horizontally. Once you let that dry you should have your home cinema projector screen all ready to go.
