First of all, you need to know exactly which model you have. With all the many different styles and models that are available, the steps to reset may vary depending on which model you own.

Next, check your screen. If there is a lock symbol on the screen that means your 'hold'� switch is in the locked position. If it is, slide the 'hold'� switch to the unlocked position and double check the screen to see if the symbol is still on.

If the iPod is being used as a hard drive, the screen will show 'do not disconnect'� until ready to eject iPod in iTunes or from Mac OS.
