Belly Dance Basics

Belly dance like any other dance style has its own basic techniques. It is not enough just to sway your hips and move your feet since this would look uncoordinated. Belly Dance is a performing art which can be executed gracefully and with the right projection so that one would not be misunderstood as a cabaret dancer. Certain basic movements are part of belly dance that should be mastered to deliver fluid movements that would please the audience and elevate belly dancing into an art form.

Belly Dance is composed of four basic moves that can be considered the core of the dance. A variation can be made depending upon the dancer as one slowly learns the intricacies in this dance. Nevertheless, it is highly suggested to practice regularly the basic moves until consistency in performing the routine is achieved. The Four Basic Moves are:

Basic Staccato Hip Moves

The Basic Stance may seem basic but requires discipline in maintaining a good poise starting from the standing position. The feet should be flat on the ground with body weight distributed so balance is maintained. Toes are pointed forward while the knees are bent slightly which readies the body in a position to shift movement. The staccato hip moves includes hip twist, Hip bump as well as Up and Down Hips.

Basic Rolling Hip Moves

The Basic Rolling Hip Moves involves hip movements that rotate to form horizontal 8 through various vertical and horizontal movements. This movement also includes basic hip circle and vertical hip circle.

Basic Ribcage Circles
This dance step is more advanced since no movement should be made from the waist down. The rib cage is isolated to move on its own by maintaining straight leg stance.
This basic step includes horizontal rib cage circles, diagonal rib cage circle, vertical rib cage circle with undulation.

Basic arm, Shoulder ,and Head moves
This move includes arm waves, Shoulder rotation with arm ripples also known as "snake arms" and head slide. Crucial in the execution of these steps are arm and hands movement that form semi-circles and flowing like a wave.

Basics of Belly dance can be mastered through focus, determination and practice.
