Dexter Character Rudy Cooper The Ice Truck Killer

Season one of Dexter gave us incite into Dexter's life and activities. This entire season also focused on the Ice Truck Killer and the games he played. Dexter became aware of the serial killer after the dismembered, skinned and bloodless bodies of hookers began to turn up around Miami. From the very beginning however, it was clear that the killer had an eye on Dexter and knew that he was a fellow serial killer.

Rudy left clues at every police scene that meant little to law enforcement, while it offered confusion for Dexter. From one victim Dexter received a severed head to his vehicle and later that night he found a Barbie doll that was dismembered. One hand had fingernails that were each painted with a different colored nail polish. Dexter next found five severed human fingers that were painted in a similar way.

After the kidnapping of Tony Tucci, the security guard, body parts began to appear at prior vacation spots of Dexter and his adopted family. The killer seemed to be sending messages about Dexter's past. A past that Dexter knew little of due to a suppressed memory.

The Ice Truck Killer sent messages that suggested that he may be trying to impress Dexter. Later on in the series he appeared to hate Dexter's past that was spent with his adopted family. He was mocking the Harry and his moral code.

During the game of cat and mouse, Dexter and Debrah became acquainted with Rudy Cooper. He made and fitted prosthetics for amputees and worked closely with the still living but maimed Tony Tucci who was missing one arm and foot after his rescue.

Debrah began dating Rudy, and seemed to want to get to know Dexter since he was dating the sister. When Dexter visited his past to learn about his recently deceased birth father, Rudy came along for the ride along with Debrah and Rita. Whatever lay in the past of Dexter would be out in the open thanks to the Ice Truck Killer.

Through a series of gruesome clues, Dexter eventually discovered that Rudy Cooper was actually Brian Moser, and the Ice Truck Killer. He was the older brother that Dexter had forgotten. The dismembered corpses, cut with a chainsaw represented their mother. The fingernails painted different colors were the manicure style that their mother preferred.

All of the bodies, crimes and clues were leading Dexter to his past, his brother and the day that their mother was murdered. Killed in front of her two sons, her gruesome death would change each brother forever. They would become the very man who had taken their mother's life.

While Dexter had been adopted after he was found in a two inch thick pool of his mother's blood, Brian had a different fate. Harry ignored him and rescued Dexter. As a police officer he Harry knew that since Dexter was three years old he had a better chance of blocking out those horrific days and living a normal life, while the older Brian would be destroyed forever.

Harry was wrong on one account. Dexter was no more normal than his murderous brother. However, by enforcing his moral code, Harry was able to convince Dexter that killing bad people were okay but he could never take an innocent life.

Brian was sent to and raised in a psychiatric hospital. He had no family and no one to care for him. He murdered the real Rudy Cooper and took over his identity while he searched for his younger brother Dexter. Their mother had always told him, look after your younger brother and years later, Brian aimed to do just that.
