Basically, HD DVD is a high density optical disc format that was developed and designed for data storage and “high definition” multimedia.

The basic disc structure of the HD DVD is the same that of the standard DVD. However, even though its disc structure is similar that of a standard DVD, HD DVD can store large amount of data. As a matter of fact, HD DVD has a storage capacity of 15 gigabytes of data on single layer discs and can store up to 30 gigabytes of data on dual layer discs. The HD DVD disc storage capacity is three times more than that of a standard DVD disc.

As previously mentioned, the HD DVD disc structure is very much the same that of the standard DVD discs. HD DVD stores its data 0.6 millimeters below the physical surface of the disc to prevent any damage of the data if the surface of the HD DVD disc is scratched.

Even though HD DVD is now available to the consumers, research and enhancements on its disc structures is currently being undertaken and has allowed the developers of HD DVD to craft hybrid HD DVD optical disc formats. Hybrid HD DVD contains standard DVD video formats also has the same structure that of standard DVD and HD DVD and can be recorded and read on a regular DVD and HD DVD players. The disc structure of hybrid HD DVD is more like a combo HD DVD disc. It is dual sided; meaning on one side of the optical disc contains standard DVD format while the other side contains HD DVD. Each side of the optical disc has dual layer capability.

If you have enjoyed the experienced and like the viewing quality that of a standard DVD, you will, without a doubt, enjoy the high definition and “in depth” clarity of the HD DVD. HD DVD is one of the greatest feats that man has came up with. Even though, DVD and HD DVD have the similar disc structures, HD DVD is the best way to fully enjoy your viewing experience.
