The HD DVD is one of the two “next generation” optical disc formats (of which are currently engaged in a sort of competing format war) primarily developed and designed to replace the DVD optical disc format.

On the other hand, if you compare the storage capacity between a standard DVD disc and a HD DVD disc, the HD DVD has much larger storage capacity. As a matter of fact, the storage capacity of the HD DVD is three times that of the standard DVD. In addition to that, the HD DVD provides better quality viewing because HD DVD provides “High Definition” and “in depth” clarity audio and video. One of the several HD DVD issues that have emerged since the optical disc format’s release is that although HD DVD is considered as the formal replacement of the standard DVD format, it is supported by fewer companies compared to its counterpart.

Although a number of HD DVD issues have emerged, HD DVD also has some advantage over its counterpart in the said format war. HD DVD and standard DVD share the same disc structure. As a result HD DVD has full backward compatibility and is capable for recording and playback of standard DVDs and VDs.

Although much has been said regarding HD DVD issues, the said “next generation” optical disc format is considered as the best there is today. HD DVD brings about a whole new level not just in optical disc format but also in fields of home entertainment industry by providing a whole new “high definition” and “in depth” clarity of viewing experience.
