The Pros And Cons Of A Satellite HDTV Receiver

On February 17, 2009, America's television format switches entirely from analog to high definition television. It's sort of like switching from eight-track cassettes to CDs, but overnight all of the existing eight-track players explode. Although we are unsure of the explosive potential of analog televisions (they will most likely just stay blank), people's tempers will sure explode unless they have a satellite HDTV receiver or an HDTV converter box.

Why Are They Doing This?

They're doing this switch partially because they can. HDTV is more and more becoming the transmission format of choice among cable networks and even local television news broadcasts on regular network channels. Also, there haven’t been any analog television sets made for some time and no plans are being made to resurrect them. The entire industry prefers HDTV.

So, if you have satellite TV and a television that's over 10 years old, you better make sure it has some sort of satellite HDTV receiver. If you are thinking of getting satellite television for the first time, then your new service package should already include a satellite HDTV receiver. Any brand new television in the United States has to be HDTV capable.

Things To Look Out For

The good news about satellite HDTV receivers is that the cost of the technology has come down in the last twenty years. Also, it now not necessary to have a dish as big as your house in order to get a decent picture. Depending on where you live, a dish the size of your palm may be all that you need.

When you go satellite shopping, there will be a lot of terms tossed about. One of these is USB satellite TV receiver. You will be able to get HDTV broadcasts with one of these. However, you won’t be able to use this kind of satellite HDTV receiver on your television. This is for computers.

Although some communications networks have incredible new-subscriber packages, they usually only last for a couple of months, then they jump up to their regular price. You need to know what the regular price is before you sign up. Take your time to compare, but always know that you are free to choose another provider. Although it might be inconvenient, you are allowed to drop your current provider for another. You can even switch back again a few months later if you really miss the previous service.
