Your Responsibility: Knowing How Television Is Good For You

There have been so many views and reactions stated and said regarding television and its effects on children, the youth, and the society. Reason being, more and more people of different ages spend more time --- long hours --- in front of the television than in other things. Watching television is not essentially bad; it is when one becomes obsessive on it that results to something negative. How television is good for you matters on how you deal with it; it has always been true that an excessive use or intake of something could lead to something bad; there should always be balance and discipline in handling things.

Several studies show that television is influencing negatively on children and the youth. Of course, if one doesn’t screen what he watches and if he continues to just absorb and accept what’s being presented to him, then that’s wrong. Watching television becomes negative because most often than not, it leads to violence or aggression, poor academic performance, and distorted family values; also, because of long hours in front of TV, it promotes passivity and results in less creativity, obesity, and laziness.

However, let’s also see how television could be good for you as everything always has a positive counterpart and benefit or else it’s useless. Through TV, families and friends can gather together and enjoy spending time together, one becomes aware of the things and events happening around him and people get exposed to the differences and uniqueness of other cultures, etc. How television is good for you would depend on how you use it and how you see it. For example, you can have special and quality times with your family, bonding in front of the TV --- watching your family’s favorite show or an event or discussing the story’s plot and resolution. Through this, you get to express your opinions and ideas with each other bridging the generation gap. You get to cuddle and snuggle with your loved ones and children while laughing, crying, and enjoying the show. It serves as a break from your other rigorous and tedious physical activities, because you get to sit and watch without exerting so much effort. It also allows people and family members to start lively discussions and ask intelligent questions.

There are actually pros and cons in watching TV; determining how television is good for you depend on how you address, accept, analyze, understand, and react to TV shows that count.
