How Ethanol Density Can Affect Its Use

A lot of people are not really aware that ethanol density matters according to its uses. As a form of alcohol that is derives from grains and other alcohol producing plants, ethanol density varies considerably. The ethanol market is quite big in scope thus different ethanol manufacturers sought to address the need of this market by producing different grades of ethanol. Producing different grades of ethanol is really a sort of win-win situation for many ethanol companies. If one type of ethanol does not sell well, the company can always market their products yet on another market segment.

Density Is Everything

The degree of ethanol density plays a vital role to determine whether such form of alcohol is fit for human consumption or for other purposes such as fuel. For instance, pure ethanol is high density ethanol which is colorless and odorless. Pure or high density ethanol can cause severe damage on human tissues and should not be ingested at any time. High density ethanol is considered as industrial grade alcohol which can be used for different purposes such as fuel, disinfectant and others.

On the other hand, very low density ethanol which can be found in most alcoholic beverages and some types of medicines are safe for moderate human consumption. According to experts, very low density ethanol is good for the body when taken in small doses. However, too much intake of even very low density ethanol can be harmful to the body. People who are known to consume large amount of ethanol through alcoholic beverages often suffer from level problems especially when they get older.

Even very low density ethanol can aggravate certain types of medical conditions. For instance, people who are suffering from certain types of cancers should not touch any ethanol based beverages to avoid complications. Pregnant women are also prohibited from sampling any ethanol based products to protect the fetus. Studies have shown that ethanol can cause disruptions in the mental development of the fetus thus pregnant women should shun these types of drinks altogether.

How Do You Know That The Ethanol Is Food Grade Or industrial Grade?

There are ways to determine ethanol density. Most manufacturers of ethanol put the density of their product on the label. If you want to know the ethanol density of the wine that you want to buy, read the label carefully. Lower ethanol density is best if you are not used to drinking wines. On the other hand, if you want to use ethanol as disinfectant, you need high density ethanol. Pure ethanol is best for killing germs and bacteria.
