Setting Up A Sound Family Budget
Setting Up a Sound Family Budget: The Key to Financial Freedom
Everyone, no doubt - needs to spend their money for their food, clothes, house rental, transportation and health care. There are also bills to pay for electricity, water, telephone, internet and cable. With all these expenses, you will just realize that nothing will be left from your income - and you will end up financially drained.
For this reason, financial budgeting is widely promoted to families to help them manage their money. One needs to know how to budget soundly so that they have control over their money - and not their money controlling them.
Budget can be use by a family as their roadmap - and as an analysis tool for their finances. It is a very useful guide to know whether they have spent their money as they have planned it. This will help them achieve the financial goals they have set early on.
For a family to achieve the financial stability they desire - a couple must both work closely together. Nothing will happen if the couple will not agree and decide to prepare a family budget that they will both follow and adhere to. It will be very difficult when one is following a budget while the other keeps on spending away.
Why Some Budget Fails
Many families have been doing their best to budget their monthly income. However, they fail because of any of the reasons you find below:
The Need For Motivation.
There are families who easily get discouraged and fail when it comes to budgeting. Why is this so? Perhaps because they lack motivation to keep moving on towards their goal of less expenditures and more savings. And while some of them do get inspired to do family budgeting because of external motivations - but when faced with difficulties along the way, they easily give up.
To succeed in budgeting - one must have an internal motivation. You must have faith and truly believe that budgeting can help you meet the financial goals of your family.
Impractical Expectations.
Some people would expect that they could immediately see positive results financially when they are budgeting. Others may expect that they can easily change their spending habits after a close monitoring their expenses for just about three to four months. And some people even expect that they can easily save a lot of cash when having a budget. But if they have not met their unrealistic expectations they would give up what they have started.
Budgeting in reality needs perseverance. And along that should come realistic goals and expectations with regards to one's finances. In order not to be disappointed, one should set achievable financial plans and goals. Then one must follow it consistently - and stick to it.
Pessimism.
When you think of budgeting negatively - you are bound for failure.
First and foremost, one must understand the effects of subscribing to a family budget will have in his life. He must be able to learn that this will be for his own good and that of his family's. He should acknowledge that having a family budget would be to his advantage later on in the future – while still being able to take care of his family's present needs.
It is important that one must have a positive attitude about financial budget to succeed. This will make him do it more – and do it in a consistent basis.
Guidelines In Setting Up Your Own Family Budget
? Determine your monthly income
Identify how much the total monthly income of the family is. This would include the monthly take home pay of spouses - if both are working - and other members of the family who will contribute an amount per month from their salaries. It may also include your monthly investment income and interest from your savings.
? Find out and allocate budget for each expense
? Transportation
One of the expenses that will highly consume one's family income is transportation. This includes fuel expenses, taxes and licensing, vehicle insurance, parking or public transportation. You also have to include auto loan expense until this will be fully paid.
You may allocate budget of these expenses for about 9–12% of your income.
? Living Expenses
Most of the basic needs of the family are under living expenses. This includes enough food for the family, clothing, and home living supplies such as your groceries, toiletries, and others. If you have household help you also have to include in your budget.
When you have kids who are already in school, you also have to budget for their education - like tuition fees, books, school supplies, and allowances.
? Family Care
The health of each of your family members is very important. You may want to set aside an amount for your dental - and monthly check up with your family's doctor. This also includes payment for your health care insurance and life insurance.
? Obligations
Your monthly obligations must also be included in your budget such as your home loan, personal loan and credit card payments.
? Housing Expenses
If you do not own your house, you also have to allocate budget for your monthly rental. House repairs must also be considered.
Your monthly utility bills such as water, electric, internet, telephone and cable must also be budgeted.
? Family Recreation
Some of the families allot time to spend & enjoy each other's company. For some they watch wonderful movies or dine out in a nice restaurant once a week. Other families would prefer to have out of town trips every month for great bonding times.
Every family needs time for recreation to strengthen their love for each other. However, a responsible couple must ensure that they include this expense in their monthly budget.
You do not have to spend much for your family recreation though. You can always find creative ways for your family to have a grand time together without having to make big holes on your pocket.
? Allocate budget for savings
It is very important that one must include savings in their budget per month. You must allocate at least 5-10% of your income.
A separate bank account may just help. Having one used entirely for your family's savings will at least ensure a certain amount each month that will be useful for you in the future.
One should learn to save for his future. This will be your safety net when times of financial difficulty strike. Being able to save early on, will mean more financial stability for you.
? Deduct your expenses from your income.
When you have identified your total income and your projected expenses - deduct your expenses from your income. This will help you find out if you still have money left or you have a deficit.
You will find out your current financial standing after getting your net income. This will make it clear for you, if you are earning enough or whether you are spending more than you need to. Being aware of this, will be critical in your every day decision-making process that will involve your finances.
? Find ways to balance your budget per month.
You must do your best that you balance your budget per month vis-à-vis your expenses. However, this is not an easy task at all. When you are confronted with a deficit during your budget planning, even if you have taken out some expenses that are not necessary - you have to find ways to balance your budget. Be creative if you have to.
Review your expenses and identify the amount you need to cut off. You have to be realistic when evaluating your expenses. Check what expenditures you can reduce - without sacrificing too much of the needs of your family. If you find it fitting to reduce the budget of your family recreation - you may do so.
When you are done with your evaluation of your expenses and you have cut- off some of them - you have to prepare a new budget until you have balanced it – and preferably with some savings left.
? Test your budget.
Once you have already finalized your budget, try to put it to work. Spend your money based on your plan and you stick to it. Don't be swayed to any sudden urges and wants, which will lead you to deviate from your financial goals.
? Evaluate your budget.
Evaluate your budget every end of the month. Check all of your expenses if it matches on your budget. Subtract your income against your expenses and see if you overspent or not. If you overshoot - try to adjust your budget and determine possible expenses that you can cut or lessen.
Prepare another budget based on your actual expenses and continue to evaluate your budget every end of the month.
The Key To Financial Freedom – Family Budget
Setting up a family budget will lead you to financial independence in the future. It will start you right by learning to value your hard-earned money. You will learn to concentrate on what you really need – more than what you just wish and want to have.
And while it will be nice to have something you always have dreamed of having, yet it may not necessarily be the right time for now. Get only what you can afford, and take on the luxury that is within your means. Never spend more than what you can pay for.
One should not try to compare with others – and be contented with what he can currently do with. When the better days come – when you finally have saved much, have higher income and have the financial stability, then you may plan for some luxury for yourself and your family.
Having a sound family budget will do well in leading you to the right road to financial freedom. It will guide you to be conscious of expenses that may not be necessary - and be focused on spending for those that you really need. It teaches you to spend wisely – thus enabling you to allocate more for those that are important & critical for you. And more importantly, subscribing to a well- planned family budget will ensure a better & stable future for you and your loved ones.
