Keeping Track Of And Protecting Your Personal Financial Information

In today's world it is very easy for someone to get a hold of your personal financial information. There are many reasons for this but primarily it is because most people do not know what their rights are where their personal financial information is concerned. This article is going to look at ways to keep track of and protect your personal financial information so that you can have as much control as possible over what companies know about you.

What You Can Stop Companies From Distributing

You will never be able to completely stop all of your personal financial information from being distributed but the federal government does have laws to help protect you. These laws weigh your right to privacy against financial companies need to provide information for business purposes. Without going into details on the specifics of the laws this article will discuss what you can and can not do to protect yourself.

First you can limit information that is shared within the financial company you belong. Many times information is shared among divisions within your bank however it is well within your right to prevent that information from being shared freely and force the bank to ask your permission to do so.

In addition you can also protect yourself by opting to not have your bank share information with organizations it is not affiliated with. This is generally the practice as is but in some cases it may not be so. Check to see what you have agreed to with your bank.

There is some information your can not stop your financial institution from distributing. One is any information about you in response to a court order. If the bank is ordered to provide records and information it must do so.

The other is your history of payment on loans and credit cards to credit bureaus. While some banks may be much more lenient on this, they are required by law to report to the credit bureau your history of payment.

So in conclusion the best thing to do is contact your bank and discuss your options as far as privacy is concerned. They are required by law to disclose how and where they are sharing your information so try to get as much as possible. If you bank is at all hesitant to give you this information you may want to consider going to a different institution that values your personal financial information more than your current one.
