The Benefits Of Yoga During Pregnancy

Yoga during pregnancy is a great way to prepare for labor. It is also very beneficial for expectant women because it helps promote good breathing and relaxation that helps regulate your body during pregnancy. Yoga during pregnancy is also a good way to relieve you from physical, mental and emotional stress because of its calming effects. Learning yoga during pregnancy together with other mothers-to-be is a great way to find friends who share the same journey towards motherhood.

There are some precautions that you need to take before doing yoga during pregnancy. These are the following:

- Be sure to tell your yoga instructor that you are pregnant and what trimester you are already in even if you have been attending yoga classes before getting pregnant.

- After your first trimester, be sure not to do poses that will decrease flow of blood to the uterus. Avoid poses on your back.

- Avoid poses that will over-stretch your muscles, your abdomen in particular. This is to avoid risks of strains and injury to your belly, which is more likely now that you are pregnant because of the hormone called "relaxin" that helps the uterus expand. This hormone also softens your tissues.

- Yoga during pregnancy on your second trimester should involve standing poses. Perform standing yoga poses with your heels resting on the wall or with a chair for support. This is to avoid injuries and accidents because you are more prone to getting off-balanced during your second trimester.

- Never do yoga in a hot room. Studies show that working out in hot temperature could cause danger to the baby.

- Be careful when bending forward. Do this with hips hinged, leaning forward with your breastbone and extending your spine from your head to your tailbone. This will give more space to your rib cage allowing you to breathe easily.

- Always keep your pelvis in a neutral position when doing poses. By doing this, you can be sure that your buttock muscles and hip flexors are relaxed preventing leg pains that are common during pregnancy. It also helps prevent risks of injury to the connective tissue that makes your pelvis stable.

- When performing twists, concentrate more on the shoulders and the back rather than from the waist to avoid putting pressure on your belly. Perform twists as far as comfortable to you, over twisting is not good for pregnant women.

You should pay attention to what your body is telling you. Any discomfort on your poses means that you need to stop. To know more about yoga during pregnancy it is best that you talk to an expert yoga instructor to customize a program suited for you.
