Restoring Cigars

Cigar is an expensive commodity. Not all people can enjoy the smoke of a cigar, let alone the high–premium ones. Cigar is as delicate as your bottle of wine. It also shares the same characteristics with wine. It tastes better as it ages and it needs the same delicate restoring method to keep the cigar’s taste at its highest quality.

Cigar patrons must have known by now the art and science of restoring cigars, but those who have just started to love the aromatic flavor of cigar need to know the techniques in restoring their precious pieces. Restoring cigars needs a lot of patience in order to enjoy the tasteful flavor of cigars.

Many people have wondered how those cigar experts or tobacconists keep their cigars from the damaging effects of vermin and changing weather condition. Well, there is no need to worry. Here are some of the basics in restoring cigars that everyone should know at least by heart.

A cellar is to wine, while humidor or humidifier is to cigar. One of the necessary requirements of a would-be cigar aficionado is a humidor. It is a must-have for people who want to keep their stocks of their precious pieces. A good humidor can let any cigar lover enjoy a couple of puffs all year-round.

The key to making full advantage of a humidor is to strike a balance between temperature and humidity. Too much humidity or the lack of it can dry-up the tobacco thus, losing its taste and flavor. Humidifier should be charged to a humidity of 60-70% in 70°F. A good quality humidifier is the one that is lined with Spanish cedar, because this wood maintains the flavor and the aroma of the cigar. Once the temperature of the humidifier is not maintained, the cigars will dry-up and break into pieces. Before this happen knowledge in restoring cigars will just come in handy.

When you notice that your cigar is about to dry-up, don’t entertain the idea of throwing it away because the cigar can still be salvaged, thus saving you from the unnecessary cost of buying another sticks. The first thing to consider in restoring your cigar is not to put the cigar in an environment that will trigger or hasten its disintegration. Avoid drastic moves; instead make gradual steps. The initial step is to put the cigar inside a sealed container or box, keeping it for a couple of days that will give the cigar sometime to absorb and breathe. If need be, do this again for a couple of weeks until the cigar attains a supple and soft texture.

Once the cigar is fully rehydrated it is time to transfer the cigar to the humidor. It is important to gradually increase the required humidity level of the humidor to condition the cigar to its new environment. When the cigar is back to its normal state, it is assured that the flavor is back and its aroma is intact.
