Only very few people would argue the fact that tea is good for you. So if you're one of those few people, you'd best read this article.

There are several types of tea, of course. There's white tea, green tea, black tea - yep, they probably have it in the whole spectrum. Then, there's chai tea, pu-erh tea, and the ever delightful iced tea. But scientists argue that the best tea there is definitely is green tea. But what makes it so healthy?

The Benefits of Green Tea - Antioxidant Tea

Amazed by all the wonders of green tea, this beverage that's centuries in the making, scientists and researchers the world over decided to sit down in their labs and examine all the elements contained in green tea to find out exactly what makes it so beneficial. One of the components they found was antioxidant tea and this substance is apparently what makes tea so healthy.

Tea generally comes from Camellia sinensis, a diminutive plant whose leaves are gathered, dried, and oxidized to make those lovely beverage for afternoon teatime. Tea leaves are apparently packed with antioxidant teas. These antioxidant teas are said to have very beneficial effects on the body, particularly when it comes to fighting off diseases.

Antioxidant Tea - How it Works

Oxidation is a normal process that takes place in the body. We need it in order to metabolize fats and glucose in order to produce heat and energy. However, during heat and energy aren't the only things produced. Oxidation also results in highly unstable oxygen byproducts called free radicals. These free radicals can cause damage to our cells and it is believed that once damage is accumulated, it could lead to aging, chronic or degenerative diseases, or even death.

The job of the antioxidant tea is to neutralize free radicals, stop them before they can do more damage. Certain antioxidant tea may also repair damages that might have already been incurred. Every time antioxidant tea neutralizes a free radical, the antioxidant also loses an electron and stops being able to function as an antioxidant. This is why you must continually re-supply your body with the vitamins and other chemicals, such as antioxidant tea.

Dr. Oguni, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences in University of Shizuoka, Hamamatsu College, Japan says that the high concentration of antioxidant tea in green tea has various benefits. Some of these benefits include the following:

* Preventing food poisoning
* Reducing the risk of cancer
* Practicing oral hygiene
* Preventing the increase of cholesterol
* Controlling high blood pressure
* Lowering blood sugar
* Slowing the aging process
