ORAC Score And Antioxidant For Aging

According to studies of animals and human blood at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging of Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Boston, foods that have high ORAC scores may protect cells and their components from oxidative studies. ARS is the chief scientific agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
What is ORAC?

ORAC is short for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a test tube analysis that measures the total antioxidant for aging power of foods and other chemical substances. Due to recent furor over antioxidants, ARS researchers have decided to look more closely into isolating the benefits of such substance and they found that adopting ORAC as a method of study might help them achieve their goals much easier.
What does a high ORAC score mean?

Early findings of studies on antioxidant for aging suggest that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables with high ORAC scores may help slow oxidation. Foods such as spinach and blueberries have high ORAC scores, which led scientists to believe that they may contain more antioxidant for aging properties and thus help in slowing down the processes associated with aging in both body and brain.

"If these findings are borne out in further research, young and middle-aged people may be able to reduce risk of diseases of aging--including senility--simply by adding high-ORAC foods to their diets," said ARS Administrator Floyd P. Horn.
What are the effects of eating plenty of foods with high ORAC scores?
According to the studies on antioxidant for aging conducted by ARS researchers, foods with high ORAC scores generally have the following benefits:

* Raised the antioxidant for aging power of human blood 10 to 25 percent
* Prevented some loss of long-term memory and learning ability in middle-aged rats
* Maintained the ability of brain cells in middle-aged rats to respond to a chemical stimulus--a function that normally decreases with age
* Protected rats' tiny blood vessels--capillaries--against oxygen damage

Based on these apparent results, it is the contention of antioxidant for aging nutritionist Ronald L. Prior that if it is shown that a relationship between ORAC scores and health outcome in people, then there will come a point that ORAC scores may become a new standard for good antioxidant for aging power.

ORAC Score - What it means for Antioxidant Aging

The idea that there is such a thing as an antioxidant for aging has long been tossed about in the scientific circle. In fact, many of the maladies of aging are well accepted to be caused by oxidative damage caused by free radicals. By analyzing the antioxidant for aging potential of food through ORAC scores, scientists may find it easier to identify the type of foods people should eat to promote their own health.
