Anxiety Panic Attacks

Severe Anxiety And Possible Treatments

Anxiety can appear in various forms in our society nowadays, it may be a temporary situation, not wholly affecting your quality of life. However, there are also numerous cases of severe anxiety, that can permanently affect one’s life in an especially negative way.

Anxiety can also render a person unable to go on with the daily tasks and chores, to do professional assignments, and to cultivate personal relationships, thus basically, to live life properly. In these severe cases of anxiety, one should seek out a doctor, who can make a diagnosis and then take the necessary steps and prescribe suitable medication, as life with a permanently severe anxiety is simply unbearable and unsustainable.

Some Severe Anxieties

There are several major anxiety disorders, with a partly unique set of symptoms and characteristics, especially regarding the reason for or object of the anxiety. Social phobia for example is characterized by anxiety when one has to interact socially with a group of people, perform in front of them or develop relationships with new people.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by recurrent obsessive thoughts occupying the patient’s mind, and though he or she may realize that they are obsessive, nothing can be done against them. One may be obsessed with the thought whether he or she has locked the door, turned the lights off, or obsessive thoughts may be connected to for example dirt or germs.

These obsessional thoughts are usually accompanied by obsessional acts, like checking the lock of the door several times, or cleaning certain spots, even though they have been clean for hours. Panic attacks or panic disorders may be characterized by unpredicted panic attacks throughout the day, with severe anxiety, psychological and physiological symptoms. One may have a heightened sense of dread or have hyperventilation, for example.

Things to Keep in Mind

Milder cases of anxiety may be cured by self-help, by taking on a less stressful lifestyle, a balanced diet, meditation or the avoidance of drugs, alcohol or caffeine, however, those suffering from severe anxiety disorders may need more serious help in most of the cases. Firstly, psychological treatments are available to help the condition of severe anxiety, these treatments are the ones that are usually tried first.

The patient may learn about his symptoms, face them, and learn that they are not really that frightening. People with obsessional-compulsive disorders may be helped by applying techniques of thought stopping, or people with phobias can be treated by a step by step exposure to the object of anxiety. There are also a number of drugs available that may help the patient cope with a severe case of anxiety.

Some drugs can help to treat the physical symptoms of anxiety disorders, many though work only on a short-term basis and are highly addictive. People suffering from severe anxiety disorders are also quite often prescribed various antidepressants, that can relieve the feeling of helplessness and loss.
