Causes, Symptoms And Treatment For Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is a condition that has similar symptoms to that of acute bronchitis but have several different causes. Chronic bronchitis can be caused by acute bronchitis which is probably why chronic bronchitis symptoms are similar with those of acute bronchitis. This form of bronchitis usually lasts longer than three months and can occur several times a year for several years. The presence of sputum, yellowish to greenish mucus that is expelled when coughing is one of the most obvious symptoms of this condition. Other symptoms are shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and a feeling of heaviness or breathlessness in the chest region.

Factors That Trigger Chronic Bronchitis

This type of bronchitis is caused by several factors, most of which are connected to the exposure to minute particles that coat the windpipe and bronchi thus developing into inflamed tissues. Acute bronchitis is also another cause of chronic bronchitis. Some cases of acute bronchitis become permanent. Many smokers do not realize that they have chronic bronchitis and think that they are only clearing their throat. Exposure to toxic gases can also contribute to this condition.

Treating Chronic Bronchitis

This condition may be more difficult to treat than acute bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis can lead to death especially when left untreated or undetected. Taking medication is the most recommended form of treatment for chronic bronchitis. Bronchodilators and some home remedies can supposedly treat this condition. Caution is to be exercised when using home remedies as these may not be recommended by doctors. One way to reduce the presence of mucus and reduce the inflammation is to reduce or avoid exposure to irritants such as smoke, dust and other minute particles or gases that can aggravate the condition.

Preventing chronic bronchitis is better than having it but for some people, there is no choice about this matter.
