Recommendations For A Diet For High Cholesterol

Having high cholesterol levels is a sign that something is wrong with a person's diet. There are two kinds of cholesterol in the human body, LDL and HDL. LDL is also known as bad cholesterol. It is important to have a low LDL level to be healthy and avoid heart conditions. HDL level should be in ratio with the level of the bad cholesterol since these two make up the overall cholesterol level of a person.

To achieve cholesterol levels within the given range, a diet is necessary. Most people actually go on a diet for high cholesterol level reduction. High LDL level means that there is an excessive amount of cholesterol in the blood stream and the possibility of hardening arteries and plaque deposits and build up are imminent. A diet for high cholesterol individuals can help to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream and bring down the elevated levels.

Symptoms of high cholesterol are not usually visible when it is just starting so it is best to have blood work done yearly to be able to monitor levels in the blood. The more noticeable symptoms usually come out when there has already been some deposits of plaque on the arterial walls.

Ways To Minimize Saturated Fats

The culprits which should be minimized in a diet for high cholesterol individuals are saturated fats and cholesterol. The human body already produces more than enough cholesterol for its use so we do not have to take in startling amounts of this in our diet. There are many ways to limit the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol which can be applied to a diet for high cholesterol individuals.

Consuming a minimal amount or none at all, of fried foods is one way of keeping to a diet for high cholesterol. When frying, it is better to use liquid oil compared to lard and other forms of solid fats. Deep frying should be kept to a minimum or avoided especially when battling high cholesterol. While it is best to avoid red meat during a diet for high cholesterol, choosing to eat lean meat cuts may be acceptable sometimes but not often. Chicken skin is chock full of fats and cholesterol as well as egg yolks, so it may be best to avoid these when on a diet for high cholesterol reduction. In combination with a diet for high cholesterol, exercise of some form may be done regularly to help eliminate excessive amounts of fats in the body.
