Choose Your Natural Head Lice Treatment

Eliminating head lice is one human ailment that often responds quite well to complimentary or alternative treatments just as well as commercially made products. The thing to keep in mind with using a natural head lice treatment is that you need to spend as much time as you need to do it properly and you will usually need to repeat it. You also need to have everyone in your household do the natural head lice treatment – or conventional head lice treatment – or you will just get re-infested again.

Also keep in mind that any head lice alternative treatment most likely hasn’t gone through any standardized clinical tests, where all conditions can be controlled. Most of these natural head lice treatments are recommended through anecdotal evidence only. You probably know of a few off the top of your head (pun intended).

This writer also has used natural head treatments on the very few occasions she happened to get head lice (it was my boyfriend's fault, I'm sure). That, too, I must admit, is also anecdotal evidence. But at least there usually aren't any harsh side effects if the natural head lice treatments don’t work.

One of the natural head lice treatments getting a lot of buzz is using a hair dryer set to high on your hair for as long as you can stand it. Heat does often kill louse eggs – as well as the adults. However, the risk of getting a burned scalp is all too prevalent and it uses a lot of electricity. There are safer methods.

Another is to slather your hair with a food grade oil like vegetable or olive oil and leave it on for fifteen minutes, then comb out your hair carefully with a flea or nit comb, wiping the comb on a paper towel after each swipe through your hair. However, most people cannot afford this natural head lice treatment.

Some argue that the treatment I used wasn't technically a natural head lice treatment. I used a hair conditioner bought from a store. But if you use a natural shampoo or conditioner, then I'm sure it could be classified as a natural head lice treatment. First, saturate your hair with water so it is dripping wet. Then use like you would a vegetable oil. Repeat this treatment in three or four days to kill any head lice that may have hatched since the last treatment.
