Suggestions For Head Lice Prevention

Head lice are parasites that live off human beings in the scalp. They lay eggs in the hair strands and live there for their entire life cycle. These are rampant in children and communities with lack of proper hygiene. These parasites can run fast enough through the hair strands and can easily evade questing fingers. Head lice prevention is better than getting rid of them because these can occur again and again depending on the exposure.

Avoid Contact

The easiest way to contract head lice is to have contact with a person or individual infested with them. Avoiding contact is the best head lice prevention there is. Head lice prevention should be taught to children who are very comfortable with each other in their classrooms and day care centers. The best way to prevent head lice infestation is to be able to tell which students have these parasites and make sure that their condition is brought to the attention of their parents or guardians.

It is not only contact with the actually person that one needs to avoid but also contact with the infested person personal belongings. Head lice prevention should extend to not using the personal belongings of the infested person. Examples of personal belongings are hairbrushes, combs, towels, pillows, blankets and other things on which the infested person may have rested his or her head. Beds should be cleaned thoroughly if a head lice infested person has used them. Some people go the extreme point of head lice prevention by boiling the bedclothes or using strong detergents and cleansers to wash the bed sheets and pillowcases. The bed itself should be vacuumed or put out in the hot sun as well as the pillows.

Good Hygiene

Another way of head lice prevention is to bathe daily and to use your own things for your personal grooming. Practicing proper hygiene and care for your body is a key to head lice prevention. By bathing daily with the right kinds of shampoos and soaps, you get rid of any stray parasites that may have wandered onto your head. Head lice cannot stand daily washing and may eventually get washed off as well as their nits or egg cases.

Using your own brushes and hats can also be a way of head lice prevention. Head lice may be carried around when a person infested with these parasites borrow someone's cap or hat. Keeping your personal belongings for your own use is a natural way of head lice prevention.

Head lice prevention is better than treating an infested scalp. Some medicated products for head lice can have dangerous side effects when used in the wrong way.
