Laser Removal Technology For Unwanted Hair

Laser removal is the latest technology in removing unwanted hairs in the body. Laser removal works by transmitting a ray of laser to a collection of hair follicles with enough control to permanently obliterate the root but safe enough to the surrounding skin. The process of destroying the root of the hair is called selective photothermolysis.

This process is called selective because it does not hit the skin, it only targets the hair. Photothermolysis comes from the scientific name “Photo” meaning light and “thermolysis” meaning destroying using heat. To be sure that the surrounding skin is safe, the skin is cooled using gels, spray or other cooling agents approved for safe use.

Laser removal works by targeting the “melanin”, a substance that gives dark color to the hair and the skin. The perfect person for hair removal should have dark hair and light skin. Laser removal will not work on people with hair that is colored red, gray, white or blonde. The hot beam of laser will focus on the melanin of the skin, people with suntanned skins or dark colored skins will be at more risks of pigment discoloration and other side effects.

Laser removal is different from electrolysis. The process of electrolysis is done by removing hairs one at a time by sending electric currents to the hair follicle. This is the new method of destroying groups of hair follicles in one sending of electric current.

Laser destroys hair only when it is on the “anagen” phase or growth phase. The anagen phase lasts for a number of years and approximately 80 percent of body hair is in that phase. The good thing is that during this phase the hair has plenty of melanin, which absorbs the light emitted by the laser and is the target of the whole process.

There are four types of laser beams that are used for laser removal. They are the following:

• Alexandrite
• Ruby
• Diode
• ND and LP ND Yag

The types of laser light that are used today are guaranteed safe, easy, effective and convenient. However, there are some factors that a laser technician carefully considers to ensure a safe and effective treatment. These are the following:

• Pulse length – considered the safest for its long-pulsed lasers
• Fluence – the energy-levels can be varied for different types of skin
• Delay – laser light intervals that lets the hair follicles to cool off during treatment
• Spot size – speed of the laser light the penetrates the hair follicles it also detects the depth of the root of the hair follicles that needs to be destroyed
• Cooling – the surrounding skin should he cooled using a gel, spray of other cooling agents to protect the skin from the heat of the laser light

The above information is helpful for people who would like to permanently remove unwanted hair using laser removal. It is also best to consult a specialist before undergoing hair laser removal for safety.
