Can I Take An Early Pregnancy Test?

If you are trying to conceive or think you might be pregnant, chances are you simply want to know whether or not you are, indeed, pregnant. That two week wait between ovulation and being able to take the test and have it be accurate can be excruciating. You may even be contemplating taking an early pregnancy test. However, there are some things to consider before taking an early pregnancy test.

Why You Should Not Take An Early Pregnancy Test

Unlike what you might think, there are many reasons why you should not take an early pregnancy test. Any home pregnancy test will be as accurate as any urine test taken in the doctor's office. The test strips that the doctor's office will use are made from the same things that the store bought tests are made from. So you might be tempted to take an early at home pregnancy test knowing that it would be as accurate as if you were in a doctor's office.

However, this is not any reason to take an early pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests can detect the pregnancy hormone, HCG. This hormone is present in all pregnant women. But pregnancy tests usually only detect 25 IU/MG of the HCG hormone. A woman is assumed pregnant with more than 5 IU/MG of HCG. So even if you are early pregnant and have ten or fifteen IU/MG per HCG, an early pregnancy test still will not pick up that hormone and it will still come back as negative.

If you are trying to conceive or think you are pregnant, a negative pregnancy test is not going to make you think that you are not pregnant. You will not believe that you are not pregnant until your period comes. Instead, you will continue spending money and taking pregnancy tests until either you get a positive or you get your period. If you had instead waited until you period was actually late, you would have gotten an accurate pregnancy test without wasting all of that money.

Why You Should Take An Early Pregnancy Test

If this is your second or more child, then you can judge whether or not you should take the pregnancy test early by when you tested positive with your earlier children. If you got a positive test early on with your other children, then chances are you will, again, get an early positive pregnancy test with subsequent pregnancies as well.
