How Safe Is Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment?

Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy wherein the ovum has not attached to the uterine walls. In most cases of ectopic pregnancy, the ovum would have attached to the fallopian tubes due to some malfunction of the cilia in the tubes themselves. Ectopic pregnancy treatment may be done with medication or with surgery if the pregnancy itself does not look like it is on the verge of aborting.

There is little hop of continuing an ectopic pregnancy, especially one that has established itself in the fallopian tubes. These tubes are quite small and the growth of the ovum will damage them. Ectopic pregnancy treatment should be done as early as possible to avoid rupturing the fallopian tubes and complicating the ectopic pregnancy treatment.

There are many factors that figure in an ectopic pregnancy. Fallopian tube damage is the main reason for an ectopic pregnancy. Smoking is one of the indirect causes of ectopic pregnancy because it can damage the tubes thus altering the ability of the fallopian tubes to bring the fertilized egg to the uterus. Another cause of an ectopic pregnancy is a previous ectopic pregnancy which has damage the fallopian tubes. Some diseases can also do some damage to the fallopian tubes which will prevent the proper transport of the fertilized egg to the uterus.

Medication As Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment

The medication used for ectopic pregnancy treatment is methotrexate, which is usually injected direct in to the woman. There is an oral ectopic pregnancy treatment of this medication but studies have shown that these have a lower success rate in cessation of the pregnancy. This medication stops the development of rapidly dividing cells, particularly those of the fertilized egg.

Surgery As Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment

Surgery is usually recommended when the ectopic pregnancy has severe symptoms such as bleeding and possible signs of a ruptured tube. This ectopic pregnancy treatment may be necessary if the ovum shows no signs of aborting on its own. Ectopic pregnancy treatment of this kind is usually recommended when there is a big possibility of the ovum having attached itself well into the tubes and shows high risk of damaging them by growing too big.

In comparison, surgery has less risk than medication as ectopic pregnancy treatment because it has no severe side effects. Medication will entail ingesting substances that can affect normal body functions if taken repeatedly and frequently. The effect of this ectopic pregnancy treatment varies from person to person.
